Water Gardens

Water GardensThe ultimate in relaxation is sitting outside on your deck or patio with a glass of ice tea or a cup of coffee, listening to the trickling sound of water from your water garden. If you like, you can add a beautiful statue, fancy fountains, and colorful lights to create a tranquil setting. You can even add plants, Koi fish, tree frogs, and other things to bring the pond to life. Best of all, a water garden does not have to be a huge project. In fact, many people have created a water garden using an old whiskey barrel lined with plastic, set up with a pump and fountain, and a few goldfish. The water garden can be very simplistic or overboard with elegance.

If you are going to add a water garden in your backyard, just make sure it is blocked off from children for safety purposes. If you do have smaller children, the best solution is to make sure your water garden has a ledge on the inside should the child fall in; at least there would be a place to exit. A water garden should be created on level ground where water can drain. The best option is to put the garden on a straight line from the house so that you will have access to electricity for the pump and lights.

You should also make sure that you have easy access to an outdoor faucet for filling the water garden, which will be helpful in the summertime when the water evaporates. Be sure the pond gets both sun and shade. You need the sun for the plant growth and shade to keep the fish and frogs alive. If you do not have many trees for shade, you can always fill the water garden with oversized lily or lotus pads. If possible, try to keep the pond from being located under large trees that would have leaves, twigs, and needles falling in the water.
