A den, study or home office should be protected from house hold noise and traffic. Just how you protected you want it to be depends on the work you’ll be doing and on your powers concentration. Some people need tomblike silence and blank brick walls to get their thoughts flowing; others prefer a bit of background babble, some unique furniture and a window with a view. If you plan to bang away at a typewriter until dawn you’ll want to protect the rest of the house hold from your racket, either by distance or by sound absorbent materials like insulation or acoustical tiles. Organization is the one aspect of any study area or home office that everyone agrees is crucial. Relax in a den

As comfortable as an old shoe, as handsome as a leather chesterfield-that’s the essence of a den. More casual than a study, more private than the family room, the den depends on decor and home improvement to create the right atmosphere. The room should cater to your comfort. Beautiful furniture, overstuffed chairs, recliners, ottomans to prop up your feet, warm pools of light reflecting off wood and leather-whatever ministers to your sense of well-being belongs in a den.

Lighting should be easy on the eyes. For good reading light, place the light source behind the reader so light comes from over the shoulder. Soft general light should be part of the scheme; too-otherwise the glare from a single reading light makes your eyes weary. If your den has display shelves or contains special wall hangings or art, use spotlights or wall washers to show them off. Strip lighting in shelves or mini-track systems in bookcases could have a place in den decor they’re unobtrusive and can add to the quite mood.

Brown seems to be the classic color for a den, but you could be bold and decorate in whatever color relaxes you. If you decide to use the brown leather-and-wood look, consider using green plants as color accents.
