Though the fashion for formal libraries has passed, collecting books will never go out of style. Indeed, for some people it’s a compulsion that books seem to collect themselves, multiplying until they threaten to take over the house.
For books lovers who can control their book buying habit long enough to think about storage. These two pages contain shelving ideas for library size collection.
Planning extensive book shelving should take the architecture of the room into consideration. You will notice that the bookcases shown on these pages conform to the proportions of the rooms. A book case like any other storage system placed along a wall seems to become part of the structure of the room. You don’t want the visual lines of the bookcase to fight with the structural lines of the room. Even if you are planning to use only a portions of a room as a library area, let the room dictate where the shelves will go.
The strong horizontal lines of the mantelpiece, molding or windows are good guidelines for the size, shape and position of bookcases. If the room has any unusual vertical lines or angles, try to design the shelving to complement them. If there’s molding around of the walls you might duplicate it around the top of a floor to ceiling bookcase to give the shelving a built in look.
Built in or attached shelving is best for a large nook collection. This type of bookcase has the most stability and permanence, but the shelves themselves need not to be permanent. Adjustable brackets can give them versatility. For safety and stability wall mounted shelves or floor to ceiling units should be attached to the wall studs or ceiling joists. Stud and joists can clench nails and screws firmly. But common wall covering materials are too soft to support heavy bookcases.
